The last night lab will be held on April 17th.
Starting on April 7th, labs will meet regardless of weather conditions. Students should meet at the bus stop at 8 pm as usual. The TA will determine if the weather permits a trip to the observatory. If clouds prevent us from completing a normal night lab we will then go to the astronomy lab room (Miller Science Building, Rm. 318). We will then complete an indoor lab exercise which will count as the night lab requirement.

Questions and Answers

When I go to a night lab, do I also go to the day lab during the same week?
- Yes, you should go to your regular indoor lab on the week you attend night lab. Night lab has no affect on the indoor lab schedule. See the Astronomy 105 Lab Syllabus.
When does the online section 502 go to the observatory?
- The date for the lab for Dr. Markworth's online lab will be posted on Dr. Markworth's website.
What do I need to bring to the Observatory?
- You will need your lab manual, a flashlight with a red filter, star charts, clipboard, pencil, and warm clothes.
Where do I go to get on the bus?
- You must ride the bus to the observatory. Use of personal vehicles is not allowed. On the evening of your night lab, meet at the commuter's bus stop (located behind the Steen Library) a few minutes before the scheduled time. The bus will provide transportation to and from the SFA Observatory. The bus will leave promptly at the scheduled time, so don't be late! It usually takes about 3 hours to complete the lab. Check this website again on the day of your night lab for the status of the night lab or go to the bus stop and wait for your lab instructor. Your Astronomy 105 Lab Syllabus has information about the grading policy, location of the bus stop, etc. IMPORTANT: A total of 12 night labs will be held at the SFA Observatory. When 12 labs have been completed, no additional night labs will be held.
What night lab did I sign up for? Can I change that?
- Click on the dates in the table above to verify that you are on the class list for the night. You can sign up for only one lab at a time. To remove your name from a night lab list simply select another lab or select "Remove me from the night lab list" using the pull-down menu on the left above. Click here to refresh this form.
What if the weather is bad?
- Bad weather may lead to cancellation of your night lab. So you may have to sign up more than once. You can Check the status of your Night Lab during the hours before your night lab. When in doubt go to the bus stop to meet your lab instructor.
Why are you asked for an email address?
- A confirmation of your night lab date will be sent to the email address that you provide. So entering an email address is optional. You can use your hotmail, AOL, yahoo, etc. account. You can also use your campus email address.
